What's Better Than An Apple? A Locally-Grown One!
We all know the old saying about an apple a day but did you know the average apple travels 15-hundred miles before getting to your grocery store? If you want to keep the doctor away, you may feel a whole lot better about buying a locally grown piece of produce!
I live in North Carolina which you may be surprised to find out is one of the top apple producing states in the nation. 8 million bushels of apples are grown here each year. So instead of heading to the supermarket and buying one from across the country, I visit my favorite farmers market. Buying locally grown fruits and veggies cuts down on all the resources it takes to ship them around the world. And usually, locally grown food will cost you less!
Or, check around where you live to find a farm where you can
pick your own apples or other foods. Many times, these family farms are organic or use limited amounts of pesticides and fertilizers. You may also be able to find locally-grown sections in the produce section of your grocery store.
Buying locally grown food also keeps money in your community and supports small farms. So when you bite into your next apple you can feel good about Doing Your Part for the planet and your local economy.
