Question
"How accurate is the rain gauges you purchase at your local hardware store compared to the gauges a meteorologist would use?"
by: Randy
Answer
The gauges used by meteorologist would be much more precise than a hardward store gauge but for what you are using it for, it will be just fine. What most people need to know is whether or not it rained enough for the yards and gardens. During the growing season this is around one inch of water per week. Unless you are keeping scientific records, you'll be fine with an inexpensive rain gauge.
